Interculturalism is a political movement that supports cross-cultural dialogue and challenging self-segregation tendencies within cultures.[1] Interculturalism involves moving beyond mere passive acceptance of multiple cultures existing in a society and instead promotes dialogue and interaction between cultures.[2] Interculturalism is often used to describe the set of relations between indigenous and western ideals, grounded in values of mutual respect.[3]

Transculturalism 

The movement of ideas, influences, practices, and beliefs between cultures and the fusions that result when the ideas, influences, practices, and beliefs of different cultures come together in a specific place, text, or contact zone. The movement of cultures is not always reciprocal or voluntary—indeed, a large majority of what is deemed transcultural is the product of colonization, diaspora of different types, and exile. Some examples are the product of the necessary compromises subjugated cultures make in order to survive, as was the uptake of Catholicism by indigenous peoples in South America. As Michael Taussig demonstrates in The Devil and Commodity Fetishism (1983), the indigenous peoples could adopt Catholicism without having to give up completely on their own animistic beliefs because of the focus on spirit in Catholicism and the figure of the devil, which they could imbue with pantheistic traits. Other examples are more directly the result of globalization, which has brought about a widespread taste for the ‘cultural’, as for instance films like Bride and Prejudice (director Gurinder Chadha, 2005), which fuses Bollywood and Hollywood. The unequalness of the transcultural is exemplified by singer Paul Simon's borrowing of African music styles in the production of his bestselling album Graceland (1986)—the people he borrowed from received nothing for their contributions or their original ideas.

You could describe a mother's love for her child as transcultural, since it exists in all human cultures. Something that's true across all cultures of people, no matter how different, can be described with the adjective transcultural. The key to the word's meaning is found in the prefix trans, or "across" in Latin.

Coming back to this blog after a break. 

Lots to catch up on - 
The Unit 1 submission has been and gone, handed the film in on the 4th December.
Putting the film together was a mission, with lots of draughts and fresh starts. 
It was interesting to figure out how to tell the story of my work in a way that it made sense not only to the audience, but to me too. It was enourmously 

The feedback from the people I have shown it to has been generally positive apart from one friend saying that I appeared a bit stiff :-) TBH, This is exactly what I felt when looking at myself talking.  I found it hard to be relaxed in front of the camera, and it didn't help that I lost a front tooth right in the middle of recording the video, so I was trying to not open my mouth too much when I was speaking, contributing to my stiffness. 

My first draught was a bit more of a 'documentary', but after feedback from Marsha I had to take a different approach as it just wasnt putitng things in context enough. So I took the approach to look at the symbols that I have grown up around and tie them together in my work, which (I think) provided the necessary

I liked everyone's work, I love how people manage to really focus on small things to cotemplate. I seem to be a little bit more aboout broad strokes, but may be I need to step back and slow down a bit.

Needed to condiser SYSTEMS THINKING - for this project + going forward - systems help see the bigger picture 

Systems I focused on : Language + Fashion/clothing - how they are ifluenced by similar factors, such as society, politics, economies, etc., and are not static but are in constant motion, as are the systems that influence them.

On reflection, my interview could have centered more on Khloe and her experiences/work, rather than filtering it though my own interests like clothing and fashion. Try to be more collaborative with it, and take a step back from controlling the narrative.

I typed up a page as a Fall Festival of Failure exercise

It’s a good task to do re: failure as it will take a while to type without mistakes , therefore failing everytime I type.

This is a great little nudge to embrace imperfection and allow myself to to break away from the need for doing things ‘ properly’, or at least ‘not making mistakes’, ‘getting things wrong’, which leads to embarassment (a very strong emotion for me, possibly rooted in childhood,( being judged and judging others – Mother/grandmother, intergenerational trauma) – leading to clothing –

being properly dressed is moral

improperly dressed is immoral. There is something wrong with you if you are not presented properly. You are mentally unstable.

What would the neighbours think? What would people say?

REFLECTION

I din’t enjoy the session today. I am not too sure why. I felt disengaged, perhaps misunderstood and ignored and therefore unwilling to take part. Perhaps the format is getting a bit tiring and distant. Finding it hard to have a discussion and may be veer off for a little bit. Finding some of the course mates a bit draining. But perhaps that is sometihng to explore and be self reflective about – WHY am I finding it draining? May be because of their lack of meaningful contribution? Fixations? Narcissism? Are there qualities that I deplore in myself????

It is hard to engage in the class via chat and online in general – I felt ignored today as 3 of my posts weren’t read out and then I felt inhibited and insecure to speak. Sometimes when there is no direct physical feedback etc. there’s detachement and speaking on a topic is a bit of an out-of-body experience…. There is so much dialogue going on while others are speaking, and so much possibility for distraction. I am guilty of browsing various sites while the convetsation is going on, and perhaps doing some shopping.

Great to learn about feedback and how to structure it, the various techniques which could be implemented in class, and generally working to a system with a clear structure and objectives.

I may have a bit of ‘intellectual fatigue and find this sitting around dissecting things and being so bloody serious about feels embarrassing. And entitled. So more embarassing.

Also somehow I decided that Marsha doesn’t like me very much. Perhaps I am feeling insecure.

I feel like I need to do sometihng completely unrelated, like listening to loud music, and dancing.

Researching (foraging) interview techniques
Hans Ulrich Obrist interviewing Howard Becker 

Question ideas: 

'My favourite style of interviewing is [the style I used when] I did a study of actors and theatre people some years ago. They all claimed that they were very busy and they didn’t have a lot of time to talk to me but they would make an hour. When I sat down with them they almost always asked me, ‘How long is this going to take? I am very busy’. So I said, ‘I’ve only got maybe two questions: the first one is, “How did you get into it?” and, “Then what happened?”’ So they laughed and then they started talking and they talked for maybe two or three hours! I only asked questions to clarify things. So that is what the interviews are for. I don’t think of it as a very complex or complicated thing to do; it’s really just a conversation. You are sitting next to somebody on an aeroplane and you start talking to them: ‘What kind of work do you do? Oh, you are an art curator. How did you get started doing that?’ I mean it’s just that kind of conversation.|

Or another kind of question that I use a lot is to ask about problems, trouble: ‘You are an art curator. What do you have trouble with as an art curator?’

I ask. ‘What happened?’ ‘What did you do?’ Something that is open and that you can respond to in a way that makes sense to you.

 One of the things he said is that one has to be a little bit technically unskilled; his interviewees often helped him to fix his machine!

Studs’ greatest trick is that he keeps quiet, he doesn’t talk a lot, he doesn’t give you his opinions, he wants to know what you’re thinking about. That’s the big trick of interviewing: to listen. It’s surprising how many people want to interview somebody and then they talk all the time.

here’s an obvious one: never ask somebody, ‘Why did you do that?’ Always ask them, ‘How did that happen?’ Well, that’s a trick, but in fact it has a strong theoretical background, which is that people don’t do things for reasons; they do things because they are in a situation, something happens, they have to react, something else happens, somebody says something, and what they do is build up what they do, over a period of time, as a response to everything that is going on around them. So if you say to them, ‘Why did you do that?’ you are essentially asking them to justify what they did. It’s almost an accusation: ‘why did you do that?’

COMPLEXITY THINKING: 3 CONCEPTS

Here are three concepts that I use regularly.

Open Systems and Boundaries.– Open systems are open to the environment in which they are situated. Energy and information flow across boundaries. In other words, these boundaries are not fixed or impermeable. They are flexible and porous. 
Where we draw these boundaries depends on our purpose. What challenges are we trying to address? What situation are we trying to improve? What future do we hope to design?
Dancing Landscapes and Disciplines. — Our social and natural worlds are formed from deep, interdependent forces. We operate each day on a dancing landscape. That means that our knowledge about this world is always shifting, never fixed. We can best find our meaning through disciplines that deliver coherence, meaning, and a sense of belonging. In other words, in our conversations and relationships. 
Adjacent Possibilities and Recombinant Innovation.– We uncover better solutions by exploring adjacent possibilities. The process of recombinant innovation — what we capture with Strategic Doing — provides a simple, practical discipline to explore these possibilities.

The text is about the evolution of culture on a global and a local level, and how this constant development is influenced by a range of factors, such as various forms of circulation (novels, ballet, cinema, fashion magazines etc.), how they meet established circulation circuits, and also make new ones, depending on the context of the local culture.

Reflect 
This text was very interesting to me, as my work deals a lot with visual symbolism, communication and messaging through clothing, which is influenced by global but also local factors, and the translation of these meanings in different contexts. It also makes me think about the effect of different forms of circulation that could be used to reach different audiences.
Today, global cultural flows, whether religious, political or market produced, have entered into the manufacture of local subjectivities, thus changing both the machineries for the manufacture of local meaning and the materials that are processed by these machineries

Starting to work on some ideas for the UNIT 1 project proposal - the task is to find a sense of place / personal idenity 

I am thinking about how to link this to my personal outfit. 
There is only one way - I have to think about how this is expressed through clothing - transcultural or intercultural, clothing as a way of defining identity, standing out / blending in.
